Kano Gov’t Warns Private Schools Against Unauthorized Fee Hike

By Aisha Abubakar Mai Agogo

The Kano State Government has threatened to close down any private school that increases tuition fees without securing government approval.

The warning was issued by the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board, Alhaji Baba Abubakar Umar, while briefing our correspondent in a voice note sent via phone.

According to Alhaji Baba Abubakar Umar, the law establishing the board in 2014 clearly states that any increment in school fees must be approved by the government and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of each school. He warned that defaulters could face sanctions, including legal action.

He further cautioned private school owners against compelling parents to purchase textbooks, uniforms, cardigans, or other unnecessary items directly from the schools, stressing that such practices do not favor learning.

The Executive Secretary maintained that the board will exercise its mandate to ensure compliance with the law, but emphasized that this authority will not be used to intimidate school proprietors.

He also called on parents to always verify board approval whenever schools announce fee increments for their children or wards.

Alhaji Baba Abubakar Umar finally urged parents to pay school fees as and when due, to enable school owners to run their institutions effectively.

Meanwhile, KSCHMA in partnership with ZAYT Foundation has enrolled 170 Almajiri children into the State Healthcare Scheme. Similarly, the UK Government has invested £19 million to launch climate-resilient health and education facilities in Nigeria.

In addition, the Kano State Government, UNICEF, IHS, Canada, and Norway have inaugurated a life-saving oxygen plant at Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital.
