Katsina Ranked 7th Globally in Climate Action, Governor Radda Receives International Recognition

Katsina State has earned global acclaim after being ranked 7th in the world for climate action among 275 subnational governments across 33 African countries.

The recognition came from Green Climate International (GCI), a Canada-based climate support organization, which formally presented a Certificate of Recognition to Governor Dikko Umaru Radda in Katsina on Friday.

The award follows the state’s outstanding participation at the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), where GCI urged African subnational governments to showcase their interventions against climate change. Katsina’s presentation stood out with 14 completed development interventions and 16 proposed projects, designed to attract collaboration with international partners and multilateral climate finance institutions.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Special Adviser on Climate Change, Prof. Muhammad Alamin, said Katsina’s Green Growth Agenda—highlighted in the state’s strategic plan—offers a clear roadmap for reducing carbon emissions.

He explained that the strategy focuses on transitioning to electric vehicles, scaling up renewable energy solutions for schools, hospitals, government offices, and communities, and implementing sustainable water projects to boost agriculture and ensure clean water access.

Other priorities include afforestation, climate-smart agriculture, and resilient urban renewal projects to protect towns and cities from flooding, heatwaves, and other climate-related threats.

Prof. Alamin noted that Katsina has already rolled out several projects, such as alternative energy solutions for public institutions, carbon-sink asset development, urban flood control, rural water harvesting, and programs to combat drought and desertification.

In his remarks, Governor Radda described the award as “a testament to the vision and resilience of the Katsina people in pursuing a sustainable future,” adding that climate action remains central to his administration’s development agenda.

The award citation, signed by Edward John Smith of GCI, praised Katsina State’s “visionary leadership and demonstrable excellence in addressing the climate crisis,” describing the state’s initiatives as “a model of national excellence and a guiding light for West Africa.”

Governor Radda said the recognition would strengthen Katsina’s credibility in engaging with international partners and reinforce the state’s role as a front-runner in climate adaptation and mitigation.

The certificate presentation was attended by top government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Abdulkadir Mamman; the Principal Private Secretary, Abdullahi Aliyu Turaji; Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs, Sabo Abba; Senior Special Assistant on Climate Change, Suleiman S. Ribadu, and others.
