Community Leader Calls on Gombe Govt to Honour Gen. Sani Abacha for Creating the State
From Abubakar Rabilu, Gombe
A community leader, peace ambassador, and public commentator, Comrade Maishanu Abubakar Tanimu, has called on the Gombe State Government to honour the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, for his historic role in the creation of Gombe State.
Tanimu, who made the appeal in an interview with our correspondent in Gombe, urged the government to immortalise the late leader by naming a major public structure such as a road, university, or hospital after him in recognition of his contribution to the state’s existence.
He recalled that it was during General Abacha’s regime in 1996 that Gombe State was carved out of the old Bauchi State, a move he described as a “turning point” that accelerated the region’s growth and development.
“Without that courageous decision, Gombe might still have been a large village without the opportunities and progress we now enjoy,” Tanimu said.
He commended the effort of the heroes that fought for the state creation like late Alhaji Suleiman Kumo, late Alhaji Yahaya Umar, late Adamu Dan Jarida and Alhajj Adamu Yaro Gombe mention but few
He also commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his massive infrastructural strides, noting that his administration has significantly transformed the social and economic landscape of the state.
“While we appreciate the tremendous progress being achieved under Governor Inuwa Yahaya, we must not forget those who made this progress possible in the first place. General Sani Abacha deserves to be remembered with honour,” he added.
Tanimu further called on Gombe citizens, especially political leaders, to recognise and celebrate the sacrifices of those who contributed to the creation and advancement of the state, stressing that “the struggles of our heroes past shall never be in vain.”
