Yobe Assembly Urges Executive Action to Curb Rising Motor Accidents
From Sani Gazas Chinade, Damaturu
The Yobe State House of Assembly has called on the executive arm of government to take proactive measures to address the increasing rate of motor accidents in Ngelzarma, Damagum, and Dogon Kuka towns along the Damaturu–Potiskum highway.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Maina Digma Gana, member representing Damagum Constituency, during plenary.
Hon. Gana expressed concern over the alarming rise in motor accidents within the affected areas, describing the situation as worrisome and calling for immediate government intervention to safeguard lives. He revealed that from January 2025 to date, more than thirty people have lost their lives in Damagum alone due to frequent accidents along the busy highway.
The lawmaker urged the state government to construct a roundabout in Damagum and install speed-reducing road bumps in Ngelzarma and Dogon Kuka to curb excessive speeding by motorists.
Supporting the motion, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, and the member representing Karasuwa Constituency, Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo, emphasized the need for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Yobe Road Traffic Agency (YOROTA) to intensify public enlightenment campaigns against speeding and reckless driving.
Presiding over the session, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, called on members of the National Assembly representing Yobe State to table the matter at the federal level for possible intervention by the Federal Government.
