Kaduna State University Wins N1 Billion Competitive Grant for Commercial Agriculture

Kaduna State University (KASU) has recorded yet another landmark achievement as it emerges the only state university in Nigeria to win a N1 billion competitive grant for commercial agriculture.

Hamza Musa Makarfi, Director Corporate Services at KASU disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen.

According to Makarfi, the prestigious award, anchored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), follows a rigorous national selection process that requires universities to demonstrate exceptional institutional strength, innovation, and readiness for large-scale agricultural transformation.

Kaduna State University stood out for meeting all the stringent conditions, including having a solid agricultural entrepreneurial foundation, robust and functional facilities, and a progressive culture that embraces innovation, public–private partnership, and a proactive, “do more with less” mindset.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, expressed deep gratitude to Almighty Allah for this milestone, describing it as “a clear testimony that the far-reaching reforms in Kaduna State University are yielding tangible fruits.”

“This grant is not just a win for KASU but for the entire people of Kaduna State,” Professor Musa said.

“It affirms that when universities abandon outdated traditions that stifle creativity and instead embrace reform, innovation, and accountability, excellence naturally follows.”

The Vice Chancellor specially acknowledged the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture Dr. Maharazu Ibrahim Kubau, for his perseverance, visionary leadership, and commitment to transforming the faculty into a model of modern agricultural practice.

He noted that the Faculty of Agriculture has been among the university units that have consciously abandoned old traditions that inhibit growth and productivity, replacing them with new systems that favour innovation, efficiency, and tangible results.

Professor Musa also extended profound appreciation to the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency Senator Uba Sani, fondly known as the People’s Governor, for his steadfast leadership and commitment to steering Kaduna State towards greatness through improved health, wellbeing, and sustainable development.

The ₦1 billion TETFund grant will be strategically deployed to strengthen commercial agricultural ventures, establish agribusiness incubation hubs, and expand research–industry linkages that promote food security, youth employment, and sustainable economic growth.

Kaduna State University continues to position itself as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s higher education landscape—a university driven by reform, guided by innovation, and dedicated to national transformation.
