Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, has announced that it will hold its combined 8th and 9th Convocation Ceremonies on February 14, in what the management described as a major milestone in the institution’s drive for academic growth and transformation.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Shedrack Best, made the disclosure on Thursday during a press briefing at the university’s main campus in Bokkos, where he outlined key achievements, ongoing projects, and new academic programmes.
Best described the forthcoming convocation as historic, noting that it would celebrate graduates from two academic sessions and also mark the first award of postgraduate degrees by the university.
“This convocation is special because it will not only cover two academic sessions, but it will also witness our first set of postgraduate graduates, including those receiving Master’s and Postgraduate Diploma certificates,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor commended the media for their sustained partnership with the institution, saying journalists have played a critical role in projecting the university’s growth to the wider public.
“We deeply appreciate how you have stood with us over the years, from the 1st to the 7th convocations, and now as we prepare for the 8th and 9th. The media remain critical partners in telling the university’s story,” Best stated.
He explained that the university’s transformation agenda aligns with the “Time is Now” vision of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, who is the visitor to the institution, and acknowledged the support of local government councils as co-owners.
According to him, PLASU has secured approval to establish new programmes in Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, with plans to also introduce Allied Health Sciences such as Physiotherapy, Optometry, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Radiography.
Best further revealed that recent academic developments include the unbundling of Mass Communication into a Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, the creation of a Faculty of Computing, and improved security infrastructure as the university approaches its 20th anniversary.
He added that the institution is also strengthening its agricultural base through practical agribusiness initiatives, including poultry production, planned dairy farming, crop cultivation, orchards, and a proposed dam to support irrigation and campus water supply.
“Our campus sits in a terrain that reflects the beauty of the Plateau landscape — rural, serene, and inspiring.
Today, I am proud to say that the labour of our founding heroes and our recent efforts have positioned Plateau State University as an emerging global brand,” Best said.
Our correspondent reports that journalists were earlier taken on a guided tour of the campus by the management team to inspect completed and ongoing projects.
