The Job Placement Information Services (JOPIS) unit of the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) on Sunday organised a one-day job employability skills training for fresh B.Sc and HND graduates in Kano, in response to the growing challenges facing young Nigerians in the labour market.
The training, which attracted 30 recent graduates from different tertiary institutions, was designed to equip participants with practical skills needed to compete effectively for jobs in both the public and private sectors amid rising unemployment.
Participants were trained on how to write compelling CVs, resumes and cover letters, navigate the digital job market, develop essential workplace digital skills and prepare confidently for job interviews.
Speaking at the event, the JOPIS Unit Coordinator, Mr Buhari Abba, said the initiative was part of CITAD’s commitment to supporting young people in securing meaningful employment.
According to him, the Nigerian labour market has become increasingly competitive, making it necessary for graduates to go beyond academic certificates and acquire relevant employability skills.
“JOPIS is committed to aiding individuals in securing job opportunities, especially at a time when many young graduates are struggling to find their place in the labour market,” Abba said.
He added, “Whether you are a recent graduate or someone looking to switch career paths, JOPIS is dedicated to helping you break free from the cycle of unemployment by equipping you with the right skills and information.”
Abba urged participants to pay close attention to the training sessions and make good use of the opportunities provided by JOPIS, including access to job listings from reputable organisations across various industries.
“We want you to take this training seriously. The knowledge and skills you gain here can make a real difference in your career journey,” he said.
One of the participants, Muhammad S. Abubakar, a graduate of Bayero University, Kano, described the training as timely and impactful.
“With the current situation of the job market, many of us are confused about what employers really want. This training has helped me understand how to present myself better through my CV and during interviews,” he said.
Another participant, Maryam Yusuf Abubakar, an HND graduate of Kano State Polytechnic, said the programme boosted her confidence and preparedness for job applications.
“I have attended seminars before, but this one was very practical. I now know how to tailor my CV and cover letter and also how to search for jobs online more effectively,” she said.
The organisers said the training was part of broader efforts by CITAD, through JOPIS, to connect job seekers with credible employment opportunities and improve youth employability in Nigeria.
