The International Human Rights Commission – Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT) has expressed concern over the continuous increase in fuel prices in Nigeria, warning that the development is worsening the economic hardship faced by many citizens across the country.
In a statement issued by the Country Director of the organization, Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the commission noted that Nigeria, despite being an oil-producing nation with significant petroleum resources and refining capacity, continues to experience rising domestic fuel prices that many citizens find difficult to understand.
According to the statement, the persistent increase in fuel costs has triggered a chain reaction across the economy, leading to higher transportation fares, increased food prices, and an overall rise in the cost of living.
The commission stressed that while global oil prices may fluctuate, Nigerians expect that the country’s natural resources should translate into economic relief and shared prosperity for the population.
It added that the current trend appears to be placing additional pressure on households already struggling to meet basic needs.
The IHRC-RFT therefore called on the leadership of the country to act with urgency, transparency, and a strong sense of responsibility in addressing the situation.
The organization also urged relevant stakeholders, particularly the National Assembly of Nigeria, to review the prevailing circumstances and take appropriate measures aimed at easing the burden on citizens.
The commission emphasized that the wellbeing of Nigerians must remain a central priority in the management of the nation’s natural resources.
