The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over the non-implementation of the approved salary structure for university lecturers.
The ultimatum was announced by the union’s president, Christopher Piwuna, during an event at Sa’adu Zungur University, Bauchi State, on Thursday.
“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the Federal Government to commence payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” he said.
ASUU and the Federal Government had earlier signed an agreement in January aimed at resolving longstanding disputes and preventing frequent strikes in public universities.
Professor Piwuna added that the government must begin payment of the new salary structure without further delay.
The new salary structure is expected to improve the welfare of lecturers across federal universities and address lingering issues surrounding the 2009 FG-ASUU agreement.
However, delays in implementation have dampened optimism among lecturers in public universities. Professor Piwuna recently disclosed that many federal universities are struggling to pay salaries, with some unable to pay January wages.
ASUU has attributed the slow implementation to practical challenges, including delays in the passage of the 2026 budget and what it described as a nonchalant attitude on the part of the Federal Government.
