The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC – RFT Global Nigeria Chapter) has raised concern over reports circulating on social media alleging that a foreign national is involved in inciting religious tensions in parts of Nigeria, particularly Benue and Plateau states.
In a press release, the organization described the allegations as serious and cautioned that such claims, if not properly addressed, could escalate conflict and threaten national unity.
The IHRC called on Nigerian security agencies to carry out a thorough, impartial, and professional investigation to ascertain the truth, stressing that anyone found culpable must be held accountable in accordance with the law, regardless of nationality.
The commission also urged the National Assembly to initiate legislative inquiries into the matter to safeguard national interest, while calling on security personnel to remain objective and professional in the course of their investigations.
On the judiciary, the IHRC emphasized the need to ensure justice is delivered without bias, noting that Nigeria has the full authority to enforce its laws fairly.
The organization further expressed concern over the spread of unverified and conflicting narratives on international media platforms, including CNN, warning that such reports could damage Nigeria’s image and heighten tensions.
It appealed to Nigerians to remain calm, avoid spreading rumors, and refrain from making statements capable of inflaming religious or ethnic divisions.
The commission also condemned hate speech and any attempt to incite violence, describing such actions as a threat to peaceful coexistence.
Reaffirming its commitment to promoting peace and human rights, the IHRC pledged to continue working with relevant stakeholders to ensure stability across the country.
