The Kano State House of Assembly has withdrawn impeachment proceedings against former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, following his resignation from office.
The decision was announced during Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Ismail Falgore, who confirmed that the House had received Gwarzo’s resignation letter, effective March 27, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, the former deputy governor stated in the letter that his resignation was voluntary and in line with constitutional provisions.
Speaking to journalists, Majority Leader Lawal Hussain Dala explained that the impeachment process was discontinued because Gwarzo had already stepped down. He added that any allegations against the former deputy governor would now be left for anti-corruption agencies to handle.
“We are not the EFCC or ICPC; we discharge our responsibilities as a legislative body,” Dala said.
In a related development, a lawmaker representing Kiru Constituency announced his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal crises within the NNPP as the reason for his decision.
Meanwhile, the Assembly also received the audited accounts of local governments for the year ending December 31, 2024. The report was presented by the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Tukur Muhammad Fagge, who commended lawmakers for their support.
Additionally, the House considered a motion for a bill to establish the Minjibir College of Education and Legal Studies. The motion was moved by Abdulhamid Abdul Minjibir, Chairman of the Committee on Higher Education, who said the proposed institution would benefit residents and help reduce congestion in Kano city.
Welcoming members back from the four-week Eid break, Speaker Falgore congratulated the state government and residents on the successful completion of Ramadan and Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. He urged citizens to uphold values that promote peace, unity, and development.
