The Tudun Maliki special school in Kano State has established a climate change club aimed at promoting awareness and mitigating environmental challenges affecting the school and its surroundings.
The initiative followed a report by the founder of Beyond Inclusion Media, Hannatu Suleiman Abba, which highlighted the impact of rampant tree cutting on the school’s learning environment that affect people with disabilities.
Speaking during the launch of the club, the school’s principal, Malam Shehu Sale, said the management would ensure the sustainability of the initiative through structured learning and active student participation.
Malam Shehu explained that, the club would serve as a platform to educate students on climate change issues and practical ways to address them within their communities.
“The school will take all necessary measures to ensure the club has a sustainable structure with effective learning on climate change,” he said.
Sale added that, a dedicated staff member, Malam Musa Uzairu, has been assigned to supervise the club and guide students towards achieving their environmental goals. He noted that the school is committed to fostering environmental responsibility among students despite existing challenges.
Meanwhile, Beyond Inclusion Media has called for increased intervention and support for the school to address climate change-related issues in the state.
The organisation stressed the need for collective efforts to protect vulnerable learning environments from environmental degradation.
