A gender rights advocate in Kano State, Harira Wakili, has expressed concern over the conduct of some female social media supporters campaigning in favour of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, describing their actions as inappropriate and inconsistent with the cultural values of the state.
In a statement released to the media, Wakili said videos circulating online show behaviour she considers indecent and contrary to Kano’s long-standing traditions of modesty, discipline and respect.
She stressed that political engagement in the state should reflect dignity and responsibility, warning that actions capable of lowering the standard of women’s participation in politics must be discouraged.
According to her, such conduct risks damaging the image of women in leadership, misrepresenting the values of Kano people and sending negative signals to younger generations who look up to public figures.
Wakili called on the Kano State Government to distance itself from any supporters promoting what she termed indecent behaviour in the name of political loyalty, noting that silence could be interpreted as endorsement.
She also urged the Ministry of Women Affairs in the state to urgently address the gender and social implications of the incident, emphasising that women should be encouraged to participate in politics with dignity and meaningful contributions.
The activist further appealed to Governor Yusuf to personally speak on the matter and reassure residents of his administration’s commitment to responsible conduct, respect for women and preservation of societal values.
She maintained that citizens expect issue-based politics focused on education, security, healthcare, youth empowerment and economic development, adding that stakeholders will continue to demand accountability through democratic means.
