The Kano State Executive Council has approved a total of N61.63 billion for various development projects across critical sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, and urban renewal.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the Council’s 39th meeting held on April 28, 2026, at the Government House in Kano.
According to him, the approvals followed extensive deliberations on governance, development priorities, and public welfare.
Education Sector Takes Major Share
In the education sector, the Council approved several projects aimed at improving learning conditions and infrastructure. These include payment of over N4.45 billion for external examination fees such as NECO and NABTEB for indigenous students in 2026, as well as N834.4 million to settle feeding costs for boarding schools.
Other approvals cover renovation and construction of classrooms, provision of furniture and laboratory equipment, and upgrades in several schools across local government areas. The government also approved N2 billion for procurement of furniture for primary and junior secondary schools statewide.
Health Sector Interventions
In healthcare, the Council approved funds for the renovation of Wudil General Hospital, routine immunisation, maternal and child health services, and procurement of medical equipment.
It also earmarked resources for polio outbreak response across all 44 local government areas and the supply of essential health commodities.
Infrastructure and Works
Major infrastructure projects approved include road reconstruction in parts of the state and the construction of a key road linking Panshekara underpass to Madobi bridge, valued at over N5.28 billion.
Other approvals include renovation of government offices and public facilities.
Agriculture and Environment
In agriculture, the Council approved the procurement of over 41,000 bags of fertiliser worth N3.49 billion, alongside irrigation and facility upgrades.
Environmental projects include beautification of parks, road landscaping, drainage improvements, and provision of potable water, with over N3.47 billion earlier allocated to water supply initiatives.
Urban Renewal and Development
Significant allocations were also made for urban renewal projects such as road markings, street naming, mapping, and house numbering, alongside compensation for land acquisition.
Governor Approves Additional N21.29bn for Water Projects
In a related development, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved an additional N21.29 billion for the rehabilitation of major water infrastructure to tackle persistent water scarcity in the state.
The projects include the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and restoration of its raw water pump station at a cost of N9.9 billion.
The government also approved N11.39 billion for the rehabilitation of the Challawa raw water pump station and treatment plant, as well as the restoration of the Goron Dutse reservoirs.
The state government said the intervention is aimed at restoring reliable water supply to millions of residents.
Other Approvals
Additional approvals span transportation, planning, civil service welfare, and religious affairs, including logistics for Hajj operations.
The Council also approved a review of the state-owned Triumph Publishing Company to determine necessary interventions for improved performance.
Focus on Water Supply
Waiya emphasised that addressing water scarcity remains a top priority, noting that alongside the new N21.29 billion approval, the Council had earlier approved funds for water provision and emergency borehole construction.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving living standards through sustained investment in infrastructure and social services.
