From Abubakar Rabilu, Gombe
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has commended workers in the state for their dedication and immense contributions to governance and development, describing them as the driving force behind the state’s progress.
In a message to mark the 2026 International Workers’ Day, issued by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Government House, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the governor praised the resilience, commitment and hard work of the workforce, noting that their efforts have continued to propel the achievements recorded by his administration.
“Today, we celebrate the resilience and commitment of our workers. Your contributions remain the foundation of the progress we are witnessing across the state,” the governor said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare through fair remuneration and better working conditions.
Yahaya noted that Gombe was among the first states to implement the new national minimum wage despite prevailing economic challenges.
He added that the government has sustained regular payment of salaries, pensions and other entitlements, while making efforts to clear outstanding gratuities owed to retirees at both state and local government levels.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate,” the governor said his administration is taking deliberate steps to create safer and more conducive working environments across public institutions.
He also acknowledged the role of organised labour in maintaining industrial harmony, describing their cooperation as instrumental to the successes recorded so far.
The governor urged workers to remain dedicated and united in the face of current economic realities, stressing the need for collective responsibility in sustaining development.
“Our workers are central to effective service delivery and economic growth. We will continue to ensure that your efforts are recognised and fairly rewarded,” he added.
Yahaya further disclosed that approval has been granted for the full implementation of the national minimum wage for local government workers, including staff of the 11 local government councils, local education authorities and primary healthcare workers, with effect from May 2026.
He also called on citizens to maintain peace and unity, especially during the political season, assuring that his administration remains committed to workers’ welfare and good governance in the state.
