In a major push to strengthen internal security, the Yobe State Police Command has inaugurated a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to combat armed robbery, kidnapping, homicides, drug abuse, and organized crime across the state.
The commissioning of the VCRU office in Damaturu follows a nationwide directive from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Riluan Disu, aimed at filling the operational gap left by the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and advancing intelligence-led, professional policing.
Speaking at the inauguration,Yobe State Commissioner of Police, CP Usman Jibrin Kamfani, described the move as a “significant milestone” in enhancing public safety, improving rapid response, and reinforcing citizens’ confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
“The VCRU is designed to be intelligence driven, technology based, proactive, and community oriented
“Personnel selected for this unit have undergone rigorous screening based on competence, discipline, integrity, and operational experience,”said CP Kamfani
He charged the newly deployed officers to operate strictly within the law, respect fundamental human rights, and uphold the highest ethical standards.
The unit’s establishment reflects the IGP’s broader reform agenda to reposition the police as a more accountable, disciplined, and service-oriented institution capable of meeting contemporary security challenges in line with global best practices.
