Why Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Stands Out As Kano’s Most Prepared Governorship Candidate For 2027
By Zaharaddeen Nasiru Getso, PhD. Department of Chemistry, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria As Kano State approaches another crucial electoral cycle in 2027, the debate over leadership will inevitably focus on competence, experience, vision, and the capacity to deliver results. While political campaigns often revolve around promises, the true measure of leadership lies in a candidate’s record of service.
By this standard, His Excellency Comrade Aminu Abdussalam emerges as one of the most qualified and experienced individuals seeking to lead Kano State. What distinguishes Comrade Aminu Abdussalam from many contemporary politicians is the breadth and depth of his public service experience.
His journey to leadership did not begin in the corridors of power. Rather, it started at the grassroots level through community mobilization and youth development. As Chairman of the Gwarzo Youth Progressive Association, serving two consecutive terms between 1993 and 1995, he demonstrated an early commitment to community service and grassroots leadership. His transition into the civil service further enriched his understanding of public administration.
As Secretary of the Kano State Internal Revenue Board and an elected Auditor in the Kano State Civil Service, he gained practical knowledge of government finance, accountability, and institutional management. These experiences were complemented by his active involvement in labour unionism, where he served as Chairman of the Kano State Civil Service Union and later as Coordinator of the Nigerian Civil Service Union across the nineteen northern states. Such positions required negotiation skills, conflict resolution, and the ability to balance competing interests, qualities that are indispensable for effective governance.
Perhaps one of the strongest indicators of public confidence in his leadership was his election as Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Council on two separate occasions. First elected under direct suffrage in 1996 and subsequently re-elected under democratic rule in 1999, Aminu Abdussalam established himself as a grassroots politician with genuine electoral legitimacy.
His performance earned him additional responsibilities, including becoming the inaugural President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State chapter, and the inaugural Deputy President of the ALGON National Chairmen’s Association. These positions exposed him to governance challenges beyond Kano and enabled him to build networks across Nigeria. His service at the national level as Commissioner of the National Assembly Service Commission between 2006 and 2011 further expanded his understanding of federal governance and public sector administration.
Upon returning to Kano State, he continued to serve in strategic positions as Commissioner for Project Monitoring and Evaluation and later Commissioner for State Affairs. These portfolios provided him with firsthand experience in policy implementation, project supervision, and government coordination.Education remains a critical pillar of development in every society. In recognition of his leadership abilities, he was appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal College of Education, Kontagora, where he contributed to institutional development and educational governance. His subsequent appointments as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and later Commissioner for Higher Education further deepened his engagement with sectors that directly impact the lives of citizens.
The pinnacle of his public service career came with his election as Deputy Governor of Kano State in 2023. Serving in the state’s second highest office provided him with direct exposure to the complexities of governing one of Nigeria’s most populous and politically significant states. It also afforded him the opportunity to participate in policy formulation, strategic planning, and the execution of developmental programmes across various sectors.Beyond the impressive list of offices held, what makes Comrade Aminu Abdussalam particularly attractive as a governorship candidate is the diversity of his experience.
Few politicians can claim to have successfully navigated community leadership, civil service administration, labour activism, local government management, national public service, educational governance, ministerial responsibilities, and executive leadership at the state level. Each stage of his career has equipped him with unique insights into the challenges facing government institutions and the expectations of citizens. Kano State requires a leader who understands both the grassroots and the machinery of government. It needs a governor who appreciates the concerns of civil servants, local government administrators, traditional institutions, educational stakeholders, business communities, and ordinary citizens. Aminu Abdussalam’s career reflects a rare combination of these experiences.
As the 2027 governorship election approaches, voters will ultimately decide who should lead Kano into its next phase of development. However, when competence, experience, administrative capacity, and proven public service are placed at the centre of the discussion, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam undoubtedly stands among the strongest contenders.
His record speaks not merely of political ambition but of decades of dedicated service, making a compelling case that he is one of the most prepared individuals to govern Kano State in the years ahead.
