The Jigawa State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has unanimously passed a vote of confidence in its Chairman, Muhammad Zangina Kura, while directing him to temporarily step aside and hand over leadership to the Vice Chairman amid an ongoing leadership dispute.
In a resolution issued after an extraordinary Congress held on Tuesday, June 10, 2026, the Chapel strongly condemned what it described as the “unconstitutional, unethical, and unacceptable” purported removal of Chairman Kura. The Congress viewed the action as a “personal witch-hunt and vendetta.”
The journalists stated that a thorough review of letters sent to the Chapel revealed no record of any complaint from its members and no evidence to support the allegations against the leadership.
“The Congress has unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of Muhammad Zangina Kura, wishing him continued wisdom and courage in his endeavors,” the resolution read.
It further noted: “The Chapel’s review of your letters revealed no record of a complaint from any of the Chapel member(s) and that there is no evidence to validate the allegations. The Congress condemns this unconstitutional action in its entirety and calls for strict adherence to decorum and professionalism in the discharge of official responsibilities.”
Despite the vote of confidence, the Congress accepted that Chairman Kura should step aside and hand over the leadership of the Chapel to Vice Chairman Ahmad Abubakar Maishanu, pending further developments.
The Chapel reaffirmed its commitment to discharging its primary responsibilities in line with the ethics of the journalism profession and pledged to continue safeguarding the integrity of the Union.
The resolution was signed by members of the Chapel and copied to key stakeholders, including the Honourable Commissioner of Information, Youth, Sport and Culture, Jigawa State; the National President and National Secretary of the NUJ; the NUJ Jigawa State Council; and the Chief Press Secretary to the Jigawa State Governor.
The development comes after a series of letters regarding the purported leadership crisis in the Correspondents’ Chapel.
