From Umar Dankano, Yola
As Nigerians mark this year’s Democracy Day on June 12, Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has called for stronger public support to sustain and deepen the dividends of democracy across the country.
Governor Fintiri said the day symbolizes the resilience, sacrifices, and collective triumph of the Nigerian people in their long struggle toward nation-building and democratic governance.
This was contained in a statement issued in Yola on Thursday by the Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, in which he paid tribute to both living and deceased heroes of democracy whose sacrifices, according to him, entrenched democratic rule in Nigeria.
He described June 12 as a watershed in the nation’s political history and a constant reminder that sovereignty ultimately resides with the people.
The governor noted that his administration, over the past seven years, has recorded significant achievements in infrastructure development with direct impact on the economy and the livelihoods of citizens, stressing that it demonstrates that democracy can indeed work for the people.
“As we mark this year’s Democracy Day, I call for the continued support, patience, and cooperation of all citizens of Adamawa State and Nigeria at large. With your support, we can consolidate on our gains and deliver more dividends of democracy that will uplift our communities, strengthen our economy, and secure a better future for our children,” Fintiri said.
He also urged Nigerians to work collectively towards strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring a smooth and successful democratic process that consolidates national unity.
“The challenges of today cannot and will not overwhelm our great country. We are a people defined by resilience, courage, and hope. If we stand united, Nigeria will emerge stronger,” the governor added.
Fintiri further called on citizens to remain united, peaceful, and committed to democratic ideals, noting that nation-building requires collective responsibility, tolerance, and patriotism.
“Democracy is not an event but a process. Let us all play our part to deepen it, protect it, and ensure that it delivers prosperity, justice, and dignity for every Nigerian,” he said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, inclusive governance, and people-centered development.
