The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Ismail Falgore, has described June 12 as a symbol of Nigeria’s journey toward democratic governance and the rule of law, urging citizens to remain committed to the principles that sustain democracy.
In a statement issued on Friday to mark Democracy Day, Falgore congratulated Nigerians on the occasion and paid tribute to the sacrifices and resilience of individuals and groups who have contributed to strengthening democratic governance in the country.
The statement, signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Kano State House of Assembly, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, was made available to journalists in Kano.
According to the Speaker, the significance of June 12 extends beyond partisan politics and the struggles of the past, representing the collective will of Nigerians, their courage, and their demand for accountability in government.
Falgore acknowledged the progress made since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule but noted that significant challenges still remain in the quest to fully achieve democratic ideals.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government under Abba Kabir Yusuf to pursuing inclusive governance aimed at deepening democracy and promoting accountability across the state.
The Speaker also reiterated the commitment of the Kano State House of Assembly to addressing the aspirations of Kano residents through effective legislation that would improve their living standards.
He called on citizens to work together in good faith to safeguard democratic values and ongoing development efforts, stressing the need to build a society where justice, development, and citizen participation are realities rather than mere aspirations.
Falgore further extended Democracy Day greetings to the people of Kano, Governor Yusuf, and Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing hope that Nigeria’s democracy would continue to be strengthened through justice, equity, and active civic engagement.
“Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria,” the Speaker said.
