The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has launched the first phase of its Marine Innovation Challenge, inviting qualified Nigerian citizens to submit innovative solutions aimed at addressing critical challenges in the country’s maritime sector.
According to a statement signed by Osagie Edward, FNIPR, Deputy Director and Head of Public Relations at NIMASA, the programme will focus on three priority areas: Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs), Biofouling Prevention Technologies, and Coastal Resilience Through Nature-Based Coastal Defence Solutions.
Edward said the initiative is designed to stimulate research, technological innovation and sustainable maritime development by providing a platform for young innovators, researchers and technology entrepreneurs to develop practical solutions that will strengthen Nigeria’s blue economy.
He disclosed that the first phase of the programme is expected to attract at least 150 high-quality applications from eligible Nigerian citizens residing both within the country and abroad.
The NIMASA spokesperson added that the selected innovations would contribute to enhancing maritime safety, protecting the marine environment and promoting sustainable coastal development, while reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a leading maritime nation in Africa.
