FROM VISION TO SUCCESSION: “DOUBLE PROFESSOR” IBRAHIM LAWAL TAKES OVER AT MAAUN MARADI

MARADI, NIGER REPUBLIC — A significant chapter in the evolution of Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN Maradi) has opened with the appointment of Professor Ibrahim A. Lawal as the new President of the university, in a leadership transition that brought together academic leadership, political figures and alumni of the institution.
The transition was formally marked on Saturday, August 8, 2026, when the Founder of the MAAUN Group of Universities, Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, handed over the leadership of MAAUN Maradi to Prof. Lawal.
Adding considerable significance to the occasion was the presence of the Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Engr. Idris Muhammad Gobir, an alumnus of MAAUN Niger and one of the institution’s pioneer students.
For MAAUN, the occasion represented more than the appointment of a new university president. It offered a visible demonstration of institutional succession and the transfer of responsibility from the founder who built the university over more than a decade to an academic with extensive experience within Nigeria’s higher education system.
A “Double Professor” Takes the Helm
Prof. Ibrahim Lawal arrives at the leadership of MAAUN Maradi with a distinguished academic profile.
Describing him as a “double professor,” Prof. Gwarzo highlighted the fact that Lawal is a Professor at both Bayero University, Kano (BUK) and Maryam Abacha American University of Niger, Maradi.
Before assuming the presidency of MAAUN Maradi, Prof. Lawal served in several leadership capacities at Bayero University, Kano, including as Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Head of Department.
His appointment therefore brings to MAAUN a combination of academic scholarship, university administration and institutional leadership.
For Prof. Gwarzo, the appointment represents an opportunity to strengthen the university while giving another member of the academic community the responsibility to contribute directly to its future.
The founder congratulated Prof. Lawal and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the institution successfully.
The message from the founder was clear: institutions must create room for new leadership to emerge, while preserving the vision and values upon which they were established.
From a Modest Beginning to a Growing University Group
The leadership transition also offered an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable journey of the MAAUN Group. Prof. Gwarzo recalled that the journey began approximately 13 years ago in Niger Republic, when the institution started from relatively modest beginnings.
Through what he described as determination, sincerity, integrity and the grace of Allah, the institution expanded beyond its original base in Maradi.
Today, the MAAUN Group has grown into a multi-university education network comprising four private universities across Nigeria and Niger Republic. They include Maryam Abacha American University of Niger – Maradi, Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria – Kano, Franco-British International University – Kaduna and Canadian University of Nigeria – Abuja
The growth reflects an ambitious vision of private-sector investment in higher education at a time when African countries continue to face enormous demand for quality tertiary education.
Speaking during the ceremony, Prof. Gwarzo expressed his aspiration that institutions within the MAAUN Group would eventually produce leaders capable of occupying the highest offices in Nigeria.
Pointing to the presence of the Sokoto State Deputy Governor, himself an alumnus of MAAUN Niger, he suggested that the institution’s graduates could rise to even greater positions of responsibility.
His vision extends beyond academic certificates. He wants the universities to become platforms for producing professionals, entrepreneurs, public servants and political leaders who can contribute meaningfully to Nigeria and Africa.
The ambition is significant: to build institutions whose graduates can influence society far beyond the university campus.
A Deputy Governor Returns as an Alumnus
The presence of Dr. Engr. Idris Muhammad Gobir, Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, gave the ceremony a particularly powerful human dimension.
Gobir is not simply a political office holder attending an institutional ceremony. He is part of the MAAUN story.
He was among the pioneer students of MAAUN Niger and one of the earliest students admitted into its PhD programme. According to him, he obtained his BSc, MSc and PhD from the institution.
His journey from student to Deputy Governor provided a tangible example of the kind of transformation that universities seek to achieve.
Speaking at the ceremony, Gobir expressed pride in his association with MAAUN and commended Prof. Gwarzo for investing in education and creating opportunities for people to pursue their ambitions.
He described the founder as someone whose vision is centred on helping people become better and creating opportunities through education.
His presence therefore carried a symbolic message: the impact of a university is ultimately measured through the lives and leadership journeys of its graduates.
The Founder Hands Over the Baton
For more than 13 years, Prof. Gwarzo personally served as President of MAAUN Niger while simultaneously guiding the development of the wider MAAUN Group.
The decision to hand over the presidency signals a new phase in the institution’s institutional development.
Leadership succession can be one of the defining tests of any growing institution. Building an organisation is one challenge; creating systems capable of sustaining it beyond the founder’s direct leadership is another. The transition at MAAUN Maradi provides an opportunity to observe that process in action.
Prof. Gwarzo is not walking away from the vision. Rather, he is transferring operational leadership to a new generation of academic leadership while continuing to provide strategic direction through his position as Founder of the MAAUN Group. That distinction could prove important as the university enters its next phase.
Prof. Lawal: A New Leadership Mandate
For the newly appointed President, the responsibility comes with both opportunity and expectation.
Accepting the appointment, Prof. Lawal expressed appreciation to Prof. Gwarzo for entrusting him with the leadership of the institution and for recognising his capacity to serve.
His immediate challenge will be to build on the foundation established by the founder while responding to the evolving demands of contemporary higher education.
Universities today operate in an increasingly competitive environment shaped by technology, artificial intelligence, internationalisation, research output, employability, innovation and the changing expectations of students and employers.
For MAAUN Maradi, the next phase will therefore require not only continuity, but adaptation.
Prof. Lawal’s academic and administrative experience positions him to navigate that environment while consolidating the university’s identity as part of a growing African higher education network.
Beyond a Handover Ceremony
The significance of the Maradi ceremony extends beyond the formal presentation of an appointment letter. It represents three interconnected stories.
First is the story of institutional growth, how an initiative that began in Niger Republic more than a decade ago has expanded into a group of universities operating across borders.
Second is the story of leadership succession, how a founder can gradually transfer institutional responsibility while preserving the broader vision of the organisation.
And third is the story of impact, represented perhaps most visibly by the presence of a former student who has risen to become Deputy Governor of a Nigerian state.
These three dimensions converge around one fundamental question: what kind of leaders will African universities produce for the next generation? Prof. Gwarzo’s answer appears ambitious.
He is betting that the universities established under the MAAUN Group can produce graduates capable of occupying influential positions across business, academia, public service, politics and other sectors of society.
A New Chapter Begins
As Prof. Ibrahim A. Lawal assumes the presidency of MAAUN Maradi, the university enters a new chapter.
He inherits an institution with a history, a growing network, an ambitious founder and a community of students and alumni whose journeys increasingly extend beyond the university’s walls. The presence of the Sokoto Deputy Governor at the handover provided a compelling reminder of that journey.
A pioneer student had returned not merely as an alumnus, but as a senior public official, standing alongside the founder and witnessing the transfer of leadership to another distinguished academic.
That image captures the broader promise of education: a founder builds an institution, an institution develops people, and those people eventually return to shape society.
For MAAUN Maradi, the baton has now changed hands. The next chapter belongs to the “Double Professor,” Prof. Ibrahim Lawal. And the expectations are high.
