Insecurity:Additional Military Bases To Be Established In Kano’s Frontline LGAs

The Kano State Government says additional military bases will be established in local government areas identified as being prone to security challenges, as part of measures to strengthen the state’s security architecture and improve the protection of lives and property.
The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Uthman, disclosed this at a news briefing held at the NUJ press centre, Kano on Tuesday, where he presented the resolutions reached at a meeting between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the 44 Local Government Council Chairmen and other key stakeholders.
Uthman said the decision followed a meeting between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Minister of Defence, adding that the new military bases would complement the existing security architecture on ground comprising the Nigeria Police Force, Neighbourhood Watch and Forest Guards.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at strengthening security, improving rapid response to threats, protecting communities and enhancing the safety of lives and property across the local government areas affected by security challenges.
The Commissioner said the meeting, held on September 5, 2026, was attended by the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the state Accountant-General, and the 44 Local Government Council Chairmen.
He said the stakeholders also deliberated on infrastructure and human capital development, with the meeting also resolving that contracts for the establishment and provision of Computer-Based Test and Information and Communication Technology centres in each of the 44 local government areas had been awarded.
Othman said work on the CBT and ICT centres would commence immediately, noting that the initiative was designed to expand access to digital facilities and improve opportunities for residents across the state.
He further disclosed that the State Government would provide one rural ambulance to each ward across Kano State to improve access to emergency and basic healthcare services.
The commissioner said two drivers would be employed for each ambulance, with preference given to qualified persons from the respective wards.
He also disclosed that electric vehicle charging points would be established at strategic locations within the Kano metropolis as a pilot initiative, with plans to expand the programme where necessary.
According to him, the installation of solar-powered streetlights in each of the 44 local government areas would also commence immediately following facilitation by Hon.Abba Bichi.
He explained that the solar streetlighting project was aimed at improving public lighting, enhancing security and supporting sustainable development across the state.
On human capital development, Othman said the meeting resolved to appoint 50 special reporters for each local government area, alongside 35 advisers for each Local Government Chairman, with 15 positions allocated to members of the former APC structure.
He said the appointments were intended to strengthen grassroots engagement, communication and effective administration at the local government level.
He further announced that the new and improved monthly women empowerment programme would continue immediately, with the objective of promoting economic empowerment, self-reliance and improved livelihoods for women across the state.
Othman said the resolutions reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government and the 44 Local Government Councils to strengthening security, infrastructure, human capital development and grassroots governance, as well as improving the overall welfare of the people.
He urged all relevant ministries, departments, agencies, local government councils and other stakeholders to ensure the immediate and effective implementation of the resolutions reached at the meeting.
