The Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Joyce Ramnap, has commended members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council, for their professionalism, maturity and commitment to responsible journalism and effective information dissemination.
Ramnap gave the commendation on Tuesday following the re-election of Comrade Ayuku M. Pwaspo as Chairman of the NUJ Plateau State Council.
The Commissioner described the peaceful conduct of the election as a demonstration of the NUJ’s commitment to professionalism, democratic values and unity.
She also commended members of the Union for the maturity and understanding displayed throughout the electoral process, noting that journalists play a critical role in informing the public, shaping narratives and contributing to the development of Plateau State.
Ramnap said the Plateau State Government values its partnership with the media and expressed optimism that the cordial relationship between both parties would continue to grow for the benefit of the people.
In her acceptance speech, Pwaspo expressed appreciation to delegates, members, supporters and stakeholders for renewing their confidence in her leadership.
She described the fresh mandate as a greater responsibility to serve, protect and advance the interests and welfare of journalists in the state.
Pwaspo pledged to consolidate the achievements recorded during her previous tenure while introducing initiatives aimed at making the Union stronger, more united and responsive to the needs of its members.
She identified journalists’ welfare, professional development, digital skills and emerging technologies, press freedom, ethical journalism and the strengthening of NUJ Chapels as key priorities of her administration.
The NUJ Chairman also pledged to promote transparency, accountability and responsible leadership in the management of the Council’s affairs and resources.
She said the Council would sustain its collaboration with the Plateau State Government and its agencies, local government administrations, traditional institutions, security agencies, media organisations, development partners and other stakeholders to advance journalism in the state.
Pwaspo expressed appreciation to members of the State Executive Council, Chapel executives, delegates, partners, friends and her family, including her in-laws and church, for their sacrifices, prayers and support throughout the election process.
She described the renewed mandate as a call to greater service, commitment and sacrifice, stressing that the task ahead required the collective efforts of all members of the Union.
“Together, we shall consolidate the gains, strengthen our unity and build a stronger, more visible and more respected NUJ that every journalist in Plateau State will be proud to belong to,” she said.
Earlier, the Patron of the NUJ Plateau State Council and Emir of Wase, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad, commended Pwaspo for what he described as her numerous achievements during her three-year tenure.
He urged her to sustain the tempo and pursue initiatives that would further strengthen the Union and contribute to the development of society.
The inauguration was supervised by the NUJ National Vice President, Zone D, Comrade Adeiza Momoh Jimoh, and the Zone D Secretary, Comrade Dauda Muhammad.
They called for sustained peace and unity among members and urged journalists to support the leadership of the Council in its efforts to achieve greater heights.
Goodwill messages were also delivered by representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU).
Chairman of the Credentials Committee, Zainab Babaji, disclosed that all contestants were returned unopposed.
The newly elected executives were subsequently sworn in by the Oath Commissioner and Chief Magistrate of the Plateau State Judiciary, High Court, Jos, Adama Atong Galadima, Esq.
