The recent shortlist for the Nigerian Universities Ranking is a welcome development for the country’s higher education sector and, particularly, for Kano State, with Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) featuring among the universities shortlisted for the ranking.
The shortlist includes some of Nigeria’s notable universities, including Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the University of Lagos, Abia State University, Bowen University and Bingham University, alongside BUK and MAAUN.
Although the final ranking is yet to be released, the inclusion of BUK and MAAUN is already a source of pride for Kano. It reflects the growing visibility of the state’s universities and their contribution to the development of Nigerian academia.
Kano has traditionally been known as the “Centre of Commerce,” but the rapid expansion of its higher education sector is gradually giving the state another identity — a growing centre of knowledge and learning.
Today, Kano has two state-owned universities, two federal universities and more than five private universities, with thousands of students pursuing higher education across the state. This represents a significant transformation from about 15 years ago, when the state had only one federal university and no private university.
BUK has, for decades, remained one of Kano’s leading academic institutions, contributing significantly to teaching, research and scholarship in Nigeria. Its inclusion in the Nigerian Universities Ranking shortlist is another recognition of its established place in the country’s higher education landscape.
MAAUN, meanwhile, represents the growing contribution of private universities to Kano’s educational development. In recent years, the university has gained visibility in several academic and university ranking exercises, including the AD Scientific Index and Times Higher Education. Its appearance in the latest Nigerian Universities Ranking shortlist further adds to its growing academic profile.
The presence of BUK and MAAUN alongside universities such as Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Lagos, Abia State University, Bowen University and Bingham University shows the increasing diversity and competitiveness of Nigeria’s higher education sector.
University rankings should not be viewed merely as a competition for positions. They can also encourage institutions to improve teaching, research, academic standards, innovation and their overall contribution to society.
For Kano, the inclusion of BUK and MAAUN in the shortlist is therefore significant. It demonstrates that the state is increasingly contributing to the national academic landscape and building institutions capable of attracting wider recognition.
As we await the release of the final Nigerian Universities Ranking, Kano can already take pride in having BUK and MAAUN represented among the shortlisted institutions.
The story of Kano is no longer only about commerce. With the continued growth of its universities, the state is steadily becoming a centre of education, knowledge, research and human capital development — and BUK and MAAUN are playing an important role in that transformation.
