The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has announced that its Plant One Million Trees (P1MT) campaign has recorded more than 1,000 trees planted as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability across Northern Nigeria.
The organisation disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by Buhari Abba, Interim Media Officer for the P1MT campaign, noting that the milestone marked progress towards its target of planting one million indigenous trees across the 19 northern states by September 2027.
CITAD acknowledged the contributions of its partners, volunteers, institutions, media organisations and communities to the campaign through tree planting, public awareness, mobilisation and advocacy.
It specifically recognised the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUST), and the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme (BSADP) for their collaboration.
The organisation also acknowledged the roles of Premier Radio, Arewa Radio, Guarantee FM and Freedom Radio in promoting environmental awareness and encouraging public participation in Kano and Jigawa states.
Beyond the number of trees planted, CITAD stressed the need for sustained community participation to ensure their survival and long-term environmental benefits.
It noted that planting trees alone would not achieve the campaign’s objectives without regular watering, monitoring, protection and community ownership.
According to the organisation, the initiative aims to contribute to climate change mitigation, restore degraded landscapes, combat desertification, protect biodiversity and promote healthier communities, particularly in vulnerable and environmentally fragile areas.
CITAD also called on federal and state governments, local government authorities, development partners, philanthropic organisations, corporate bodies and individuals to support the campaign.
It said support could include providing seedlings, technical and financial assistance, monitoring tree growth, participating in planting activities and establishing mechanisms to track the survival of planted trees.
The organisation maintained that addressing climate change and environmental degradation required collective action involving government institutions, civil society organisations, businesses, young people and local communities.
CITAD reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to expand the campaign and achieve measurable environmental benefits across Northern Nigeria.
