KNSG holds mass wedding for 1,800 couples
The Kano state government held a mass wedding ceremony for 1,800 couples on Friday, October 13, 2023.
The event, which took place at the Kano Central Mosque, was sponsored completely by the state government in which it expended N800 million.
The wedding saw couples receive dowries of N50,000, house furniture, food items, N20,000 for start-up capital.
The ceremony was attended by the New Nigeria Peoples Party presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who stood for the brides, and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who stood for the grooms.
The solemnization process was led by the Kano state Chief Imam, Professor Sani Zahraddeen.
Earlier on Thursday, The Commander of the Hizbah, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa had announced that each of the brides undergone several medical tests that include, HIV, blood group, genotype and Hepatitis
Further festivities of the wedding are scheduled to take place on Saturday (Today) at the Kano Government House where families and friends of the couples will feast and listen to admonition on wedding by religious leaders.
The beneficiaries, who were mainly young girls and boys, widows, divorcees and spinsters, came from across the 44 local government areas of the state.
The mass wedding is part of the state government’s efforts to promote social cohesion and reduce poverty.
The government believes that by providing financial and logistical support to couples, it can help to reduce the number of unmarried people in the state and create a more stable and prosperous society.
In 2019, Aljazeera pegged Kano State as home to the largest number of divorcees in Nigeria.
