Adamawa Gov’t Confirms 25 Dead in Sunday Night Flood
From Umar Dankano, Yola
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has commiserated with victims of the devastating Sunday night flood that claimed lives and destroyed property and farmlands across parts of the state.
Upon his return to the state on Monday, Governor Fintiri visited some of the worst-hit areas to assess the extent of damage and express solidarity with affected residents.
He also met with displaced persons taking refuge at Aliyu Mustafa College, Yola, where he announced plans to establish a technical committee to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the disaster.
“We will constitute a technical committee to carry out a thorough assessment in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). From there, we will take the necessary steps,” the governor stated.
Governor Fintiri sympathized with families who lost loved ones and properties, assuring them that his administration would support the rebuilding and relocation of affected households.
While addressing the victims, the governor disclosed that preliminary reports indicated 23 deaths from the incident.
He urged critics of his administration to verify their facts before releasing information to avoid misleading the public for selfish political interests.
The governor attributed the flooding to heavy rainfall, blocked waterways, and storm drainage channels, which caused water to overflow into residential areas.
However, the NEMA Coordinator for Adamawa and Taraba States, Mr. Ladan Ayuba, confirmed that the death toll had risen to 25, adding that most of those hospitalized had already been discharged.
