Adamawa Govt Urges Communities to Safeguard Electricity Installations
From Umar Dankano, Yola
The Adamawa State Government has called on residents to protect electricity installations and equipment in their communities to prevent vandalism, especially as the state continues to experience erratic power supply.
The appeal comes amid ongoing routine maintenance by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which has led to power outages in parts of the country, including the Northeast region.
The call was made during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held on Wednesday in Yola, presided over by Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta. Several key resolutions aimed at improving public safety and welfare were adopted at the meeting.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. James Iliya, said the government was taking proactive steps to safeguard electrical infrastructure and other public utilities from damage or destruction.
He also disclosed that the SEC directed residents living in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer zones to avoid potential disasters and loss of lives and property due to flooding.
On the issue of out-of-school children, the council urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to enroll their wards in school, taking advantage of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s free education policy.
Iliya stressed that allowing children to remain out of school is counterproductive to the state’s development goals.
He further noted that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), has begun sensitizing communities at risk of flooding on preventive strategies.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment, Sadiq Mohammed, revealed that the state government has established a mobile court to prosecute defaulters of environmental sanitation laws.
He noted that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise takes place every last Saturday of the month from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., and residents are expected to participate actively.
Commissioner for Water Resources, Audu Ayuba, added that the SEC directed all commissioners to take the lead in the monthly sanitation campaign across the 21 local government areas of the state.
He also mentioned that the council deliberated on measures to provide drought-resistant seeds to farmers in anticipation of changing climate conditions.
