From Umar Dankano, Yola

The Challenge Initiative (TCI), in partnership with the Adamawa State Government, has wrapped up its three-year family planning intervention program in the state, recording significant progress in uptake of family planning services.

Delivering a goodwill message at a stakeholders’ meeting to mark the closure of the program, TCI’s Chief of Party, Dr. Taiwo Johnson, represented by Dr. Dorcas Akila, expressed gratitude to the state government and residents for their cooperation throughout the campaign.

She disclosed that Adamawa recorded over 29,000 additional family planning users, placing the state among the top performers nationwide.

Johnson further revealed that across Nigeria, 22 states participated in the program, with Adamawa standing out as a leader.

She noted that 1.7 million people had adopted family planning strategies nationwide, urging the state government to sustain the gains for healthier family lives.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services, Pharm. Zirra Bubanani, commended TCI for its impactful partnership in healthcare delivery.

He described the theme of the meeting, “Transitioning Adamawa to Self-Reliance in Family Planning,” as a strong call for the state to take ownership of the initiative.

In their goodwill messages, Barrister Bashir Tahir of the Adamawa Muslim Council and Malam Sanusi Yahaya Sangere, representing the NTIC and District Head of Girei, Dr. Ahmad Mustapha, praised TCI’s efforts for transforming attitudes toward family planning across communities.

While community leaders appealed for an extension of the program, TCI officials clarified that the intervention had officially ended.

However, they pledged to continue offering technical support and coaching, stressing that the state government must now take full responsibility for sustaining the program.
