Again, Trump Calls Nigeria “A Disgrace,” Accuses FG of Failing to Protect Citizens
US President Donald Trump has once again described Nigeria as “a disgrace,” accusing the federal government of failing to protect citizens amid escalating insecurity across the country.
Speaking on Fox News Radio’s The Brian Kilmeade Show on Friday, Trump said the level of violence in Nigeria amounted to genocide.
> “I think Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace. They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide. And I’m really angry about it,” he said.
Trump also alleged that the United States subsidises Nigeria financially and warned that such support could soon be halted.
> “We give a lot of subsidy to Nigeria, which we’re going to end up stopping. The government’s done nothing. They are very ineffective. They’re killing Christians at will. And until I got involved in it two weeks ago, nobody even talked about it.”
His remarks come as the US increases scrutiny of Nigeria’s worsening security situation, with armed groups, bandits, and extremist elements carrying out mass killings, kidnappings, and attacks on rural communities.
On Friday, gunmen attacked St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwarra LGA of Niger State.
The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said 315 people — including 303 students and 12 teachers — were abducted during the attack.
Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the state police command, said tactical police teams, military units and other security operatives had been deployed to the area.
The attack came just days after 25 female students were kidnapped from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State. The school’s vice-principal, Hassan Makuku, was killed, while a security guard, Ali Shehu, sustained gunshot injuries.
On November 1, Trump had threatened possible military action in Nigeria over what he described as the persecution of Christians.
