AGILE Engages CSOs, NGOs to Strengthen Disability Inclusion in Gombe
From Rabilu Abubakar, Gombe
The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) in Gombe State hosted a consultation meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to discuss strategies for enhancing disability inclusion in its programs.
Speaking at the meeting on Thursday, the Gombe State coordinator of AGILE, Dr. Amina Haruna Abdul, emphasized the importance of gathering recommendations from stakeholders to improve the inclusion of people with disabilities, particularly in education and economic empowerment.
Dr. Abdul assured participants that their input would be considered in the development of AGILE’s work plans. She also expressed concern about the widespread use of girls for farm labour, noting that this practice hinders the education of girls in the state.
The session saw active participation from individuals with disabilities, who stressed the need for greater representation and involvement of females with disabilities in AGILE’s initiatives.
They pointed out that women and girls with disabilities often face dual discrimination due to their physical impairments and the lack of access to education.
Participants urged AGILE to prioritize economic empowerment for females with disabilities, arguing that this would enable more of them to enroll in school, thereby improving educational opportunities for residents across the state.
