From Abubakar Rabilu, Gombe

The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project, in partnership with Green Climate Support (GCS), has trained 100 pilot public schools in Gombe State on environmental sustainability and strategies for tackling climate change.

Speaking at the event, the AGILE State Project Coordinator, Dr. Amina Haruna Abdul, represented by her deputy, Hajiya Aishatu Sambo, said the training was part of preparations to establish Eco Cubs in all public schools. She explained that the initiative aims to promote reforestation, afforestation and raise awareness on the dangers of climate change.

She called on environmental mentors and students to embrace tree planting, stressing that it should not only serve beautification purposes but also provide protection against the impact of climate change.

The founder of Green Climate Support (GCS), Muazzam Ibrahim, commended the AGILE Project team for working closely with partners and for providing his organisation the opportunity to contribute to addressing environmental challenges in the state.

On his part, the Environmental Lead of the AGILE Project in Gombe, Jabiru Sale Kilawa, described the training as central to the project’s implementation strategies. He disclosed that seedlings, water tanks, plant protectors and watering cans had been distributed to schools as incentives. He urged participants to nurture the seedlings to maturity and establish Eco gardens in their schools.

The training was held at three centres: Government Girls Mega College, Doma; Government Girls Secondary School, Kaltungo; and Government Mega Science Secondary School, Gombe.
