Akwa Ibom Police Arrest Man For Alleged Murder Of Girlfriend, Theft Of Her Phone

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga, and stealing her mobile phone after the crime.

According to a statement issued by the Command on Monday, March 17, 2025 (Ref: AZ:5300/AIS/PPRD/VOL.6/70), police operatives launched an investigation after Effanga, 39, was found dead in her apartment under suspicious circumstances in February. Officers at the scene observed visible signs of violence on her face and neck, indicating that she had been strangled and beaten. Her body was taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed her death before it was moved to the mortuary for autopsy.

Investigators traced Nelson as the last person seen with the deceased. He had visited her residence on the morning of February 6, which was his birthday. Police eventually located him in a church in Uyo, where he attempted to flee upon sighting the officers but was swiftly apprehended.

During interrogation, Nelson allegedly confessed to the crime, stating that he had asked to use Effanga’s phone to take birthday pictures for social media, but she refused. A struggle ensued, during which he reportedly overpowered her, strangled her with his hands, and struck her head against the floor before fleeing with her phone. At the time of his arrest, police recovered an Itel Super Phone belonging to the deceased.

A post-mortem examination has since been conducted, confirming the cause of death. The suspect is expected to be charged in court.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, assured the public that justice will be served, warning against domestic violence and other criminal activities. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
