Friday, January 16, 2026, marked the final day in office of Ambassador Richard Mills as the United States Ambassador to Nigeria.
Ambassador Mills, who served for one and a half years, led the U.S. Mission in efforts to strengthen diplomatic, political and economic relations between the United States and Nigeria during his tenure.
The U.S. Mission said Mills’ leadership focused on deepening bilateral cooperation across key areas, including governance, security, trade, and people-to-people ties.
Following his departure, the current Deputy Chief of Mission, Keith Heffern, will assume responsibility as Chargé d’Affaires, ad interim, until further notice,
