AMG Foundation Launches Empowerment Programme for 100 Repentant Thugs in Kano

The AMG Foundation has announced a new empowerment initiative targeting 100 repentant thugs in Kano State, as part of efforts to reintegrate them into society and promote economic self-reliance.

The announcement marks the two-year anniversary of the handover of over 600 repentant thugs to the Kano State Government by the Kano State Police Command under the leadership of former Commissioner of Police, AIG Muhammad Usaini Gumel, on October 17, 2023. It also coincides with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed globally on October 17.

According to a statement signed by Mallam Jalo Sulaiman, Director of Operations at the AMG Foundation, the empowerment scheme will run for three months with a total funding of ₦5 million. The programme will provide training in phone repairs, solar installation and maintenance, and also empower some of the youths with locally-made trucks for goods transportation across major markets in Kano.

Speaking on Friday, October 17, 2025, in Sokoto State while marking his 52nd birthday, Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, Chair of the AMG Foundation, said the initiative is aimed at providing sustainable livelihoods for the beneficiaries.

He added that the Foundation will collaborate with the Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS), the Kano State Police Command, and the Kano State Government to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

Dr. Magashi also recalled that the Foundation had earlier trained 50 repentant thugs in fire safety, in partnership with the Federal Fire Service, Kano State Police Command, and YOSPIS.
