In a bid to reform the lives of repentant thugs and turn them into agents of progress, the Aminu Magashi Garba (AMG) Foundation, alongside key stakeholders, has pledged support for 30 former thugs as volunteer firefighters in Kano state.
The initiative was launched at the Federal Fire Service Kano State Command headquarters, with Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, founder of the AMG Foundation, emphasizing the importance of supporting the youth, calling on the government and other stakeholders to provide necessary assistance to ensure their success.
“These volunteers will be deployed in various congested areas within Kano, receiving a monthly stipend of 15,000 Naira each. Additionally, the AMG Foundation will support another 50 repentant thugs as traffic and sanitation volunteers, offering them the same stipend for their initial three months of service” he said.
The program’s impact is evident in the words of Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ussaini Muhammad Gumel, who stated that Kano has witnessed the reformation of 662 repentant thugs. This, he noted, is a remarkable achievement, marking a significant shift from the years of thug-related conflicts that plagued the state.
S.O. Kazeem, Kano State Controller of the Federal Fire Service, outlined the responsibilities of the volunteer fire ambassadors.
“They will be tasked with identifying and reporting on unguarded waste disposal, illegal sales and use of flammable substances and harmful chemicals, conducting monthly market safety reports, and assisting firefighters during emergencies” he revealed.
Further support came from Alhaji Haruna Danzago, Managing Director of REMASAB, who pledged to employ 25 repentant thugs within the ministry. Similarly, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) Commandant, Mohammed Lawal Falala, committed to involving 50 reformed individuals in assisting the NSCDC across the state.
