Assembly Initiates Amendment to Kano Emirates Law Amid Increasing Calls for Sanusi’s Return

The Kano State House of Assembly has begun amending the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law. This comes as calls for the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II, the deposed 14th Emir of Kano, gain momentum.

The House initiated the revision process on Tuesday after Majority Leader Hussien Dala, representing Dala constituency, presented a motion during a plenary session. The specific details of the amendments being considered are not yet public.

This development follows a long-running controversy surrounding the Kano Emirate. In 2019, former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje signed amendments to the Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, which empowered him to create new emirates and dethrone emirs. This paved the way for the dethronement of Emir Sanusi in 2020, a move that was met with significant criticism.

The calls for Sanusi’s return come amidst questions about the legality of the 2019 amendments and the subsequent dethronement. It remains to be seen how the Assembly’s revisions will address these issues and what impact they will have on the future of the Kano Emirate.
