ATBU trains engineering students in modern research skills
The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi, says it is building the capacity of its students to harness engineering and technology for sustainable society and inclusive economy.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, said this at the inauguration of a one-day capacity building workshop for prospectus enginers, on Saturday in Bauchi.
The programme is being implemented in collaboration between the university, UK-Higher Education Partnership for Sub-Saharan Africa (HEPSSA) project and the Royal Academy of Engineering Education (RAEng).
Garba urged the engineering students to change their thinking of solving societal problems by embarking on impactful research.
Represented by Prof. Suleiman Dodo, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology, the VC lauded the UK-HEPSSA and RAEng for organising the workshop.
He urged the participants to put into practice the knowledge acquired by embarking on meaningful research.
Prof. Robinson Ejilah, University Project Lead, RAEng – HEPSSA, said the programme aimed at building the capacity of universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, to develop engineers equipped with skills to meet local and global challenges.
He said the exercise would ignite the participants’ passion for research, sharpen their critical thinking skills and foster a powerful network of peers and mentors.
“This workshop will also provide a unique platform for the engineering students to deepen their understanding of research methodologies and encompassing areas such as research design, data collection, analysis and interpretation.
“Amongst others, the workshop will help us to develop effective scientific writing and communication skills to effectively disseminate research findings.
“We have assembled a distinguished panel of speakers, comprising outstanding academics, emerging industry leaders, and accomplished researchers.
“Their insightful presentations will not only enrich your understanding of key research concepts but also inspire you to pursue innovative and impactful research endeavors,” he said.
According to Elijah, research serves as corner-stone of broader vision to empower the next generation of engineers, cultivate a research ecosystem within the Nigerian universities, and breach the gap between academia and industry by fostering the culture of innovation, curiosity and collaborative research.
