Atiku Warns of One-Party Dictatorship on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns about Nigeria’s political future, cautioning that the country may be heading towards a one-party dictatorship.

In a statement marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, Atiku congratulated Nigerians on the milestone but emphasized the need for collective action to protect the nation’s democracy.

In his statement, released on Monday, Atiku highlighted Nigeria’s journey through various challenges and praised the resilience of its citizens. “Our nation has traversed numerous tumultuous phases, yet the tenacity of patriotic citizens, bolstered by the solidarity of our international allies, has fortified our resolve as a resilient entity,” he said. He lauded the nation’s democratic progress, noting that Nigeria is currently experiencing its longest period of uninterrupted democratic governance.

However, Atiku expressed concern over the state of the country’s democracy, pointing out that despite the democratic foundation in place, political inclusivity and the integrity of elections remain lacking. He called on Nigeria’s political leaders to unite in a “noble mission” to protect democracy from the threat of authoritarianism.

“Our political milieu has become corrosive; opposition parties languish in weakness, while the ruling party appears to manipulate internal processes to render them ineffectual. Nigeria teeters on the brink of a one-party dictatorship,” Atiku warned. He urged all politicians and statesmen of integrity to act swiftly to safeguard the country’s democracy from oppression.

Atiku’s statement reflects growing concerns about the health of Nigeria’s political system, with critics alleging that the ruling party is stifling opposition and eroding electoral credibility.
