From Alhaji Yusuf, Damaturu

In a bid to advance women’s rights and inclusion, the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), North East Zone, on Tuesday organized a one-day Women’s Educational Workshop in Damaturu.

The event, held under the resonant theme, “Accelerate Action Towards Gender Equality,” brought together members to discuss and strategize on ways to promote equal opportunities and representation for women within the public sector and the wider community.

The workshop was inaugurated by the Yobe State Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa Shehu, represented by Mohammed Mustapha.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the AUPCTRE Yobe State Council, Comrade Abba Bukar Umar, stated that the gathering was a proud moment for the union.

“We unite to deepen women’s participation, promote gender equality, and strengthen service delivery in our workplaces,” he said.

He emphasized that the workshop captured the essence of their commitment to empowerment, growth, and effective public service.

He extended sincere appreciation to Governor Mai Mala Buni, the “Labour-friendly” Governor of Yobe State, for his continuous support and for sponsoring 76 state employees for training at the National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna.

In her remarks, the Zonal Chairperson of the North-Eastern Zone Women Committee, Comrade Lydia Bitrus, stated that the workshop’s theme was not only timely but also a call to duty.

“As women in the Trade Union Movement, our role goes beyond supporting structures; we are central to building inclusive workplaces, promoting healthy living, and ensuring quality service delivery,” she said.

“We must therefore deepen our advocacy for gender equality, women’s empowerment, and improved health and wellness, knowing that a healthy woman is a productive woman, and a productive woman is an asset to her family and the nation at large,”said Bitrus.

She expressed hope that the sessions, including the keynote address, solidarity messages, health talk, and interactive engagement, would inspire attendees to return to their various states, workplaces, and communities better equipped to contribute meaningfully to the development of the union and the transformation of society.
