Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the dissolution of the Ministry of Higher Education, a move that effectively removes the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, from his role as the state’s Commissioner of Higher Education.
The announcement was made on Sunday in a statement signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the decision is part of a broader effort to unify education administration in the state and accelerate reforms. The Ministry of Higher Education will now be merged with the Ministry of Education, with the combined entity continuing under the Ministry of Education name.
A specialized Directorate of Higher Education will be established within the merged ministry to oversee tertiary education institutions in Kano. This directorate will be headed by a Permanent Secretary and supported by personnel necessary to ensure efficient management of universities and other higher education institutions in the state.
The statement added that all agencies formerly under the Higher Education Ministry, including the Scholarship Board, will now report to the Ministry of Education. State-owned universities and other higher education institutes will be managed under the new directorate.
Governor Yusuf said the restructuring is aimed at improving coordination, eliminating duplication of responsibilities, reducing the cost of governance, and enhancing efficiency and accountability in the education sector.
He reiterated that his administration remains committed to implementing reforms designed to revitalize the education sector and secure a brighter future for Kano’s youth.
The offices of the Secretary to the State Government and the Head of Service have been directed to ensure the smooth and immediate realignment of the affected ministries and departments.
