BUK Special Needs Students Advocate for Enhanced Inclusivity Services

Special needs students at Bayero University Kano are urging immediate intervention to improve academic and social welfare services, emphasizing the need for inclusivity in their educational environment.

Mr. Oyeniyi Kudus, the President of the Special Education Students Association of Nigeria (SPESAN) BUK chapter, highlighted the importance of inclusivity and the way forward for individuals with special needs at the university during the celebration.

The historic event unfolded under the leadership of Comrade Aliyu Sadauki, the President of the Students Union Government.

Professor Hassana Darma, in her address, acknowledged the significant progress made in the past two decades, with a substantial increase in enrollments for inclusive education in the country. She commended Bayero University for providing a conducive learning space for individuals with special needs at the higher level.

During her tenure as Head of Department, Professor Darma outlined various projects, including the establishment of a special needs library, facilitating admissions, employment opportunities, and ensuring political inclusion for special students.

“Effective services, advocacy, and awareness creation contribute to the achievements of students with special needs in acquiring quality education,” she emphasized.

Comrade Aliyu Sadauki, the S.U.G President, shared the government’s commitment to address the demands of special needs students. As a starting point, the government has donated walking sticks for visually impaired students to enhance their mobility. He assured a continued commitment to academic and social welfare projects.

Furthermore, Prof. Kyauta Ibrahim, the Head of the Department of Special Education, pledged to enhance services in the department. She announced plans to recruit additional sign language interpreters for various departments at the university, reinforcing the commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment for all.
