Buni Urges Acresal to Join Forces Against Anticipated Floods

From Sani Gazas Chinade, Damaturu

Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has urged the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (Acresal), a World Bank program, to support the state government’s efforts in mitigating the anticipated floods this rainy season.

The Governor made the call when he received a delegation from the World Bank and Acresal.

According to a press statement signed by Mamman Mohammed, the Director-General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Governor Buni emphasized the need for urgent action to construct drainages to channel floodwaters outside towns and communities.

He described this as a matter of emergency and public importance to avert the looming threat posed by the anticipated floods.

The Governor also stressed the importance of supporting the resettlement of displaced communities and ensuring the resilience of communities. He noted that the resettled communities have been threatened by floods in the last three years and that constructing drainages will help avoid possible disasters.

The Acresal Task Team Leader, Ms. Joy Iyanga Agene, assured the state government of support to save the people from the floods. She commended the Yobe state government for providing a conducive environment that enhanced the performance of Acresal in the state.

The delegation was led by Mr. Vijay Kumar of the World Bank, Joy Iyanga Agene, Acresal Task Team leader, Cesena Cavecchi, Senior Social Specialist and North Coordinator of the World Bank, and Shehu Mohammed, Yobe state Acresal coordinator.”
