Centre Trains Kano PWDs on Climate Action, Advocacy

The Banki Moon Centre for Global Citizens on Sunday organized a one-day workshop in Kano State to empower persons with disabilities in climate change mitigation and advocacy towards ensuring inclusive and sustainable future.
Held at the Murtala Muhammad Library, the event brought together a diverse group under the theme “Promoting Disability-Inclusive Climate Change and Policy Advocacy in Kano State.”
Aftahana Dahiru Sarina, the Banki Moon Global Citizen Scholar 2024 and event host, highlighted the workshop’s importance: “This is a crucial step in empowering persons with disabilities to address climate change. By providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills, we are paving the way for a more inclusive and resilient future.”
Yahaya A. Yahaya, Chairman of the National Association of People with Physical Challenges, appreciated the initiative: “This is the first time our community is being educated on the intersection of climate change and disability. We are grateful for this opportunity to contribute to sustainable development.”
Participants received knowledge on climate change and advocacy and were given seedlings to plant at home, promoting a real connection to environmental stewardship.
Two attendees shared their stories, highlighting the workshop’s impact: Fatima, a young woman with a physical disability, said, “This workshop has shown me the crucial role we can play in addressing climate change. I am excited to use this knowledge to become a climate action champion in my community.”
Also, Aminu, a visually impaired man, remarked, “Our voices have long been overlooked in climate conversations. This workshop has empowered me to advocate for the needs and perspectives of persons with disabilities in climate policies and initiatives.”
Facilitated by Salim Wada Usman and Rukayya Jaafar, the workshop covered topics like “Disability-Inclusive Climate Action and Policy Advocacy” and the “Importance of Tree Planting.” It marked an important step towards a more inclusive and sustainable future.
