CITAD Demands Immediate Release of Detained Rhoda Jatau for Social Media Post
The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) held a press conference addressing the continuous detention of Rhoda Jatau by the Bauchi State Government over a social media post.
Y.Z. Ya’u, the Executive Director of CITAD, during a press briefing strongly condemned the violation of digital rights and demanded Jatau’s immediate release.
Jatau was arrested for sharing a Whatsapp message condemning an alleged blasphemy-related killing in Sokoto.
“Despite the message not inciting violence, she was arrested, denied bail, and remains in custody, infringing on her freedom of expression” the Executive Director stated.
Ya’u highlighted the grave implications of such actions, stating that it poses a threat to the digital rights of all citizens. He emphasized the constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression and urged the government to uphold these rights.
Ya’u disclosed the Centre demands included Jatau’s release, respect for citizens’ digital rights, federal government intervention, and the passage of a digital rights and freedom bill to prevent such injustices.
“The organization is calling upon media outlets, human rights groups, lawyers, and lawmakers to rally together in safeguarding the digital rights of Nigerians and preventing unjust detentions under the guise of national security.” Y.Z stressed.
He reaffirmed CITAD’s commitment to protecting digital rights and ensuring justice for Rhoda Jatau and others facing similar violations.
