CITAD Distributes Teaching, Learning Resources to Shara Primary School

In an effort towards enhancing education in rural areas, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has distributed teaching and learning resources to Shara Primary School in Sitti ward of Sumaila local government, Kano State.

Despite the government’s efforts to make basic education free and compulsory in Kano State, many families in rural communities struggle to afford necessities for their children’s education. In response to this, CITAD facilitated the establishment of Shara Primary School and has been closely monitoring its progress.

On July 31, 2023, CITAD organized a high-level meeting in Shara community, bringing together stakeholders in the education sector, especially in Sumaila local government. The aim was to mobilize action, ambition, and solidarity to improve education access for rural citizens in Shara and similar communities.

During the meeting, stakeholders pledged their commitment to collaborate with CITAD in transforming education in these areas. Hon. Nura Iro Ma’aji, Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Kano State, fulfilled this promise by donating teaching and learning resources to Shara Primary School.

In a formal event held on January 18, 2024, CITAD presented these educational materials to the School Based Management Committee (SBMC). Malam Labiru Musa, chairman of SBMC for Shara Primary School, welcomed attendees, expressing gratitude for CITAD’s efforts in the community. He emphasized how CITAD turned the educational challenges faced by the community into a blessing.

Mrs. Aisha Yusuf Umar, Supervisor Woman Affairs, represented Hon. Nura Iro Ma’aji at the event. She engaged with students in all classes, appreciating their performance in literacy and numeracy subjects.

Sagiru Ado Abubakar drew attention to student punctuality and advised the school-based committee to address absenteeism.

Alh. Alasan Mato, ward head of Shara, acknowledged the efforts of teachers and encouraged them to persevere in teaching under challenging circumstances.

To motivate students, Malam Aminu Adam Yusuf, a teacher recruited by CITAD, presented books and pencils to Lawisa Alhaji Dayyabu (Primary 1), Hauwa Garba (Primary 2), Zuwaira Musa (Primary 3), and Abubakar Abdu (Primary 3).

Shara community faced educational challenges until 2017 when CITAD, through community consultations, established a school under a tree. In April 2022, the state government approved the construction of classrooms for Shara Primary School. After completing the construction in September 2022, and with no teacher assigned by the government, CITAD voluntarily recruited Malam Aminu Yusuf Adam Sitti to manage the school’s activities.
