As the world commemorates the International Day of Universal Access to Information tomorrow, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) in collaboration with Kano State Polytechnic has organized a public lecture on the theme “Ensuring Access to Environmental Information in the Digital Age.”

Speaking during the event, Ali Sabo, Digital Rights Officer at CITAD, explained that the day set aside by the United Nations highlights the importance of public access to information.

He emphasized that the theme is particularly relevant, noting the crucial role of media and communication students as gatekeepers of information between sources and the public.

Sabo further stated that environmental issues such as global warming, rising temperatures, and pollution require accurate information and collective responsibility at the individual, community, and state levels.

He warned that while the internet provides billions of sources of information at the click of a button, much of it is misinformation or disinformation, which complicates public understanding, especially in the West African subregion.

On his part, Mohammed Dahiru Lawal, Head of Special Projects at PRNigeria and guest speaker at the event, observed that the digital age has brought innovations and opportunities that enhance accountability and democratic participation.

He noted the enthusiasm of students, describing their engagement and critical questions as a reflection of their interest in the global movement for universal access to information and their commitment to contributing to societal growth and development.
