CITAD Trains BUK Staff on Artificial Intelligence for Research

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), in collaboration with the Faculty of Life Sciences, Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has concluded a two-day training for academic staff on emerging technologies aimed at enhancing scientific research and knowledge production.

The workshop, held at the Faculty of Life Sciences from Monday to Tuesday, attracted 41 academic staff members. The programme introduced participants to digital tools, artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain applications, with practical sessions designed to improve data management, experimental design, research publication, and data integrity.

Speaking at the workshop, CITAD’s Human Resource Officer, Mr. Sani Sa’idu Muhammad, said the training was intended to bridge the gap between academic research and societal development.

“This programme strengthens the connection between academic research and societal needs. Emerging technologies now shape how knowledge is applied and shared,” he said, stressing that lecturers equipped with digital skills can positively influence students, research institutions, and society at large.

Prof. Hajara Adamu, Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, described the workshop as timely and impactful. “This training has expanded our understanding of how emerging technologies, such as blockchain and AI, can support scientific research, data management, and publication processes,” she said, commending CITAD’s practical approach that simplified complex digital concepts.

Participants noted that the workshop significantly enhanced their research capabilities. “The practical demonstrations on AI and blockchain applications will help improve the accuracy of research data and streamline the publication process,” Professor Shamsuddeen Umar said.

Fiddausi Ado Dandawaki added, “The training has opened our eyes to digital tools that can transform research output and knowledge dissemination. It is a wake-up call for academics to embrace emerging technologies.”

Professor Abdulkadir M. Magashi described the programme as a “critical intervention” for academic staff. “Incorporating these technologies into teaching and research will not only improve the quality of our work but also make our contributions more visible internationally,” he said.

Prof. Ibrahim L. Abdullahi, chairman of the workshop, said the training increased participants’ confidence in integrating emerging digital tools into teaching and research. “Some of these technologies were new to us, but the training simplified them and demonstrated their relevance to life sciences research,” he added.

Mr. Muhammad concluded that the programme aligned with CITAD’s mission to promote digital literacy, innovation, and research integrity through strategic partnerships and capacity-building initiatives.
