Collective Efforts Crucial for Sustainable Environment, Says Kano ACReSAL Coordinator
The State Coordinator of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, has highlighted the importance of collaboration between citizens and the government in achieving a sustainable environment.
Dr. Dahir made this statement during a ceremony at the Kano State Project Management Unit (SPMU) Conference Hall, where he was conferred the title of “The Eco-Management Fellow” by the African Institute of Waste Management Studies. The recognition took place during a visit by a delegation from the institute.
In his speech, Dr. Dahir emphasized the need to instill environmental consciousness in children through the “Catch Them Young” approach, noting that environmental challenges often stem from a lack of awareness. He revealed that Kano-ACReSAL plans to implement this initiative in 30 schools to foster a generation of environmental stewards who can lead sustainable efforts in their communities.
Dr. Dahir dedicated the recognition to the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, citing the governor’s unwavering support as instrumental to the project’s success. He also acknowledged the contributions of the State Project Management Unit team in advancing Kano-ACReSAL’s objectives.
Highlighting the project’s achievements, Dr. Dahir mentioned the recovery of over 30 hectares of degraded land through the planting of 3 million seedlings across the state. These efforts have led to the rehabilitation of shelter belts, the establishment of woodlots and orchards, and the training of more than 9,000 farmers in the Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) model.
The Executive Secretary of the Watershed Erosion and Climate Change Management Agency (WECCMA), Dr. Muhammad Salisu Khalil, lauded the African Institute of Waste Management Studies for recognizing individuals making significant contributions to environmental conservation.
Earlier, the delegation’s team leader, Ambassador Dr. Sani Usaini, stated that the award acknowledges exemplary efforts in eco-management and sustainability, particularly in environmental stewardship, resource management, green technology, and eco-awareness. Ambassador Usaini also presented a paper titled “Waste to Wealth” during the event.
Other individuals honored alongside Dr. Dahir include Dr. Muhammad Salisu Khalil (Executive Secretary, WECCMA), Prof. Baba Nabegu, Dr. Garba Saleh Ahmad, and Dr. Sabitu Sa’adu Da’u.
The event reinforced the need for collective action to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices in Kano State and beyond.
